Integer rounding and modified integer rounding for the skiving stock problem

چکیده
We consider the one-dimensional skiving stock problem which is also known as the dual bin packing problem: find the maximum number of items with minimum length L that can be constructed by connecting a given supply of m ∈ N smaller item lengths l1, . . . , lm with availabilities b1, . . . , bm. For this optimization problem, we investigate the quality of the continuous relaxation by considering the gap, i.e., the difference between the optimal objective values of the continuous relaxation and the skiving stock problem itself. In a first step, we derive an upper bound for the gap by generalizing a result of E. J. Zak. As a main contribution, we prove the modified integer round-down property of the divisible case. In this context, we also present a construction principle for non-IRDP instances of the divisible case and investigate the maximum gap that can be obtained based on these instances.

Optimal rounding under integer constraints
Given N real numbers whose sum is an integer, we study the problem of finding N integers which match these real numbers as closely as possible, in the sense of Lp norm, while preserving the sum. We describe the structure of solutions for this integer optimization problem and propose an algorithm with complexity O(N logN) for solving it. In contrast to fractional rounding and randomized rounding...
متن کاملThe Traffic Flow Management Rerouting Problem in Air Traffic Control: A Dynamic Network Flow Approach
We address the problem of determining how to reroute aircraft in the air traffic control system when faced with dynamically changing weather conditions. The overall objective of this problem is the minimization of delay costs. This problem is of primary concern in the European air traffic control system and in particular regions within the US air traffic control system. We present an integrated...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms Based on Lp Relaxation 1 Linear Programs and Linear Integer Programs
There are two fundamental approximation algorithm design techniques based on linear programming: (a) LP-relaxation and rounding, and (b) the primal-dual method. In this lecture note, we will discuss the former. The idea of LP-relaxation and rounding is quite simple. We first formulate an optimization problem as an integer program (IP), which is like a linear program (LP) with integer variables....
متن کاملWhen is rounding allowed? A new approach to integer nonlinear optimization
In this paper we present a new approach for solving unrestricted integer nonlinear programming problems. More precisely, we investigate in which cases one can solve the integer version of a nonlinear optimization problem by rounding (up or down) the components of a solution for its continuous relaxation. The idea is based on the level sets of the objective function. We are able to identify geom...
متن کاملError bounds for mixed integer linear optimization problems
We introduce computable a-priori and a-posteriori error bounds for optimality and feasibility of a point generated as the rounding of an optimal point of the LP relaxation of a mixed integer linear optimization problem. Treating the mesh size of integer vectors as a parameter allows us to study the effect of different ‘granularities’ in the discrete variables on the error bounds. Our analysis m...
